Early experiences of the telephone as an emerging communication technology were shaped not only by the device itself, but also by the voices and emotional labour of telephone operators: politeness, patience, and restraint set the emotional tone for people’s encounters with this technology. The artist purchased an old telephone at a low price from a second-hand marketplace, where it was listed as “probably broken.” Once deemed non-functional, it became detached from its original context of use, opening up the possibility of dismantling and reassembling it. Users can use its keypad and connect it to a modern mobile phone to make music with sounds sampled from telephone recordings circulating online. The obsolete telephone no longer maintains its polite demeanour; instead, it sounds out of place, even a little defiant.
